An article in last week’s Chicago Tribune examined a new, controversial study that purportedly found a link between tattoos, piercings and “trouble”:
Here’s a new aphorism: “The more body art you have, the more likely you are to be involved in deviance.”
So says Jerome Koch, a sociologist with Texas Tech University’s “Body Art Team” — true moniker — which surveyed 1,753 students at four colleges and found a correlation between multiple tattoos or piercings and “deviant behavior.”
The severally inked or poked at the unnamed Midwestern and Southern colleges said they engaged in, roughly speaking, more promiscuity, more drug use, more binge drinking, more arrests and more cheating on academics than their peers.
While the study does not imply that having a tattoo or pierce causes a deviant behavior per se, it does argue that the two activities are correlated. What do you think, BodySparklers? Is there a correlation between body art and deviant behavior? Are people likely to engage in deviant behavior more likely to get tattoos or piercings? Or, can you not judge a book by its cover? One of the most iconic symbols of the 20th century, the Playboy© bunny logo was designed by Art Paul, the infamous men’s magazine’s art director in the 1950s. The debonair rabbit head profile has appeared on the cover of every issue of the magazine since the second installment and is now an integral part of the magazine’s corporate identity. Playboy© founder Hugh Hefner once explained the meaning behind the legendary bunny:
“I selected a rabbit as the symbol for the magazine because of the humorous sexual connotation, and because he offered an image that was frisky and playful. I put him in a tuxedo to add the idea of sophistication. There was another editorial consideration, too. Since both The New Yorker and Esquire use men as their symbols, I felt the rabbit would be distinctive; and the notion of a rabbit dressed up in formal evening attire struck me as charming, amusing and right.”
Charming, indeed! Now, you can make everyday a charming, sexy day with BodySparkle’s officially licensed Playboy© body jewelry. From flirty belly button rings and naughty labrets to seductive nose screws, these authentic, Hugh Hefner-approved Playboy© items promise to spice up your look and add a naughty bit of fun to your day.

The San Francisco Chronicle recently examined a new body jewelry trend: non-piercing fashion jewelry. “Body jewelry that doesn’t require piercing” begins:
Turning heads with body jewelry once required a certain pain tolerance and ample follow-up care. These days, young Bay Area designers are embracing a different sort of body jewelry: accessories worn like crowns, draped on legs or wrapped around torsos. Pain free and commitment free, the new body jewelry has at least one potential hazard:
“When we go out with a shoulder piece or a leg piece, you can’t walk across the room without somebody stopping you,” Rachael Mann, 27, says of the avant-garde accessories she and her sister, Mackenzie Burdick, 23, make under the name Litter.
These statement-making accessories span everything from vintage chains and found metal objects to delicate chains strung with accents such as wooden beads and smoky, clip-on quartz nuggets that can be harnessed around the torso or worn as necklaces instead. Unique, versatile and commitment- and pain-free, the unconventional non-piercing body jewelry pieces have achieved a certain cult status in the fashion world.
So, what do you think, BodySparklers? Does this new trend have staying power? Will fake, non-piercing body jewelry go mainstream? Tell us in the comments!

Fox13 Now Utah reported last week that a 12-year-old middle school student was suspended for her nose ring. According to the news item, Suzannah Pabla decided to get her nose pierced in honor of the Indian holiday of Diwali. When school officials spied her new adornment, they promptly suspended her for violating the school’s dress code.
“If it was religious, I think there would be a revisitation. Culturally, it’s very difficult,” [Davis School District spokesman Chris] Williams said, adding that the district does not allow students to wear leis at graduation because it’s tradition, not cultural.
Williams said the district did seek input about Hindu and Sikh faiths about their beliefs on piercings.
“She didn’t do it to rebel. She just wanted to be a part of her culture,” said Shirley Pabla, the girl’s mother, who is also a substitute teacher at Bountiful Jr. High. [Pabla argued that] “culturally, piercings are fairly common in India”… [and that] school officials and the community at large need to recognize the diversity that is there in the student body
Suzannah and her mother eventually agreed to swap out her flower stud for a clear piercing retainer. However, questions remain: Should school dress code policies be more lenient towards youngsters’ body piercings? Does it matter that Suzannah got the piercing to honor her heritage? Should piercings for religious or cultural reasons be allowed in schools? Tell us in the comments!
