Nashua Telegraph: Piercings may be popular, but they can lead to problems
The Nashua Telegraph recently covered complications associated with piercings. The article notes growing concern from physicians and researchers on the various problems that can occur from piercings:
A recent study published by the British Medical Journal reported that 28 percent of all people who got non-earlobe piercing experienced a complication – usually, swelling, residual bleeding, slow healing or infection – with half of the complications serious enough that the patient sought help from a medical professional.
“It is vital that anyone considering a piercing ensures that they go to a reputable piercer to reduce the risk of problems,” said Dr. Fortune Ncube, a researcher with Britain’s National Health Protection Agency, who led the study.
Despite the troubling statistics, body jewelry enthusiasts still find that the positives of piercings — coupled with easy common sense prevention techniques — outweigh the potential risks. So, tell us BodySparklers: Have you ever had a complication from a piercing? Did you have to seek medical advice from a doctor? How do you keep your piercings clean and free of infection?
Wyoming Man Beats Record for Piercings
CBS News reported earlier this week that a Wyoming man has set a new world record for piercings! You may remember almost one year ago when BodySparkle reported the news that Texan mechanic Jeremy Stroud had set a new Guinness World Record with nearly 1,200 piercings in one sitting. Now, Ed Bruns has set the bar a bit higher: after a grueling four-and-a-half hour session, this human pin cushion is the proud new owner of 1,501 piercings:
Ed Bruns stood in front of a crowd taking applause after four hours and 27 minutes of almost constant poking with needles on Sunday evening. As a total of 1,501 needles shimmered with the light of camera flashes, Bruns’ legs began to quake, and the shock began.
It was the shock of being a new Guinness World Record holder with 304 more piercings than the previous attempt. It was the shock of actually doing something that dozens of people called him crazy for even trying.
And it was a little physical shock from the year-supply of 16-gauge piercing needles still stuck in his arms, back and legs. Despite some shock, Bruns made the attempt look easy. He never complained and only blinked hard a few times when the piercing artist put needles through the tender skin on the back of his knees.
Whoa: that’s a lot of piercings! So, Bodysparklers: How many piercings have you had done in one session? What do you think inspires someone like Bruns to get so many piercings in one day? Tell us in the comments!
New Concepts: Hearing Aid Body Jewelry
Walyou broke the news earlier this month about an exciting new development in the body jewelry industry:
Tired of the same old, boring hearing aid? Over-ear pieces getting in the way of your glasses or sense of style? Design Affairs has come up with a hearing aid molded to look like the ear tunnels that are growing in popularity again.
The design also promises to work better than a regular hearing aid since its placement on the ear provides optimal horizontal positioning for the microphone. The Deafinite Style hearing aid is designed for individuals with a medium level of hearing loss; for those with a severe loss, a “plug” can be added to increase power and amplification.
Today, tunnels and plugs are considered to be a statement of self expression, though the piercings have held different significances throughout history. The size of the tunnels are not mentioned, however they look to be quite large, so even those who already have tunnels or plugs may need to do some stretching in order to wear the hearing aid version.
The microphone, usually placed in an in-ear mold or looped around the back of the ear, is instead placed inside a piece of body jewelry. A small, clear receiver is placed inside the ear, similar to the one found in a standard hearing aid.
What do you think, BodySparklers? This product isn’t available yet — do you think there’s a market if it’s launched? Would you wear a hearing aid modeled as a gauged plug? Tell us in the comments!
